To enable the thimble to bedriven into the flue without injury tothe bead, the tubular portion of thethimble is extended beyond the flangeso as to form a projection in line withthe tube and upon this projection thehammer blows are received. The thimble is preferably a dropforging of steel or malleable iron sothat when driven into the flue, it may thimble from the flue, the thimble ismade with laterally projecting lugs, one at each side. By driving a wedge-shaped tool between the flue and thelugs, the thimble can be forced out of. EMERGENCY THIMBLE IN PLACE. the flue. By the use of the emergencythimble, when injury takes place, orleakage is threatened at the joint be-tween the flue and flue-sheet, it may bestopped or patched up as it were, with-out removing or replacing the flue, un-til such time as regular repairs can bemade. The idea in the emergency thimbleis to stop a leak and yet keep theboiler-tube in service for the timebeing. It is, of course, not designed to bea permanent fixture, but is useful for whatit is intended, an emergency. September, [008.
