Haynes new guide and motorists' complete road log of Yellowstone National Park . tSprings has been built. Orange Spring Formation.—This isolated moundhas been built up by a small spring in its top, to a heightof 15 feet. From here the road leads a short distanceeast, up grade, to a ridge overlooking— Bath Lake.—The lukewarm water supplied froma spring on the southern shore of this lake is very finefor bathing. The government has built a small bath-house on its northern shore. While there is no visible out-let to this lake, the water is always fresh, as it constantlyescapes through fissures below the surface. Bathers shouldbe very cautious, as the bed of Bath Lake is rough and therock very sharp in places. Devirs Kitchen may be safely entered by thestairway. This cave is the interior of an extinct hot springas the character of the walls plainly show. It was firstexplored in 1881, at which time numerous bones ofwild animals were found. White Elephant.—Around the small springs onthis travertine ridge are patches of colored algous YEiLLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK 41. ORANGE SPRING FORMATION growths where lime is being deposited. The great sizeof the mound is an indication that these springs havebeen active probably for centuries. Stalactitic Cave and Stygian Cave, above which isan old formation called St. Jacobus Ladder, are about 600feet west of the White Elephant. Stygian Cave exhalesthe suffocating carbonic acid gas which has caused thedeath of many birds and small animals. Angel Terrace is passed on the way from theWhite Elephant to the main road. This terrace is probablythe most beautiful of all in point of coloring. The Buffalo Herd.—The buffaloes or Americanbison of the park may be classed in three groups, namely:The show herd near Mammoth Hot Springs, which isfenced in; the ^tame^ herd on the Lamar Eiver, 29 mileseast of Mammoth Hot Springs, and the scattering wildbands which have not become connected with the herdsdirectly under the governments care. 42 HAY
