View NNW along Na Tri Shean Neolithic horned long cairn on the summit of Cnoc Freiceadain, Caithness, Scotland, UK: the southernmost of 2 long cairns

View NNW along Na Tri Shean Neolithic horned long cairn on the summit of Cnoc Freiceadain, Caithness, Scotland, UK. The southernmost of two long cairns set at right angles, it is aligned SE-NW with low horns defining rectangular forecourts at both ends. Higher mounds at each end were probably freestanding round, or heel-shaped & horned, chambered cairns incorporated into/linked by the long mound. The adjacent long mound (Cnoc Freiceadain) has a round mound at its S end: the name Na Tri Shean (the three fairy mounds), now applied to just the S cairn, refers to these mounds. The protruding slabs in the foreground may be the tilted capstones of a burial chamber in the mound at the SE end. Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment, visible on N coast to rear, was founded in 1955, its third & final reactor was taken offline in 1994.
