Dendroaspis polylepis Black Mamba snake

The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is a large and lethally venomous snake found in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. This one was photographed on the banks of the Zambezi River, Zambia They vary in color from grey to dark brown, but not black - they get their name from the dark black colouring inside their mouths, which they often display when threatened. Black mambas are quick nervous, highly aggressive when threatened and venomous. For these reasons, the black mamba is often considered as the world’s deadliest snake. Without black mamba antivenin a bite from this fearsome serpent is 100 percent fatal!
