Count Wilhelm III (1434 - 1480) of the House of Henneberg-Schleusingen on a grave slab near the altar of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta at Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The slab was sculpted by Erasmus Forster and installed some 15 years after Wilhelm died while returning from Rome.
Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: detail from grave slab of Count Wilhelm III. The complete slab shows Wilhelm’s with his long-haired wife Margaret. The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
