He acceded to the throne at the age of 15 after the death of his father, King Mongkut, Rama IV. King Chulalongkorn is considered one of the greatest kings of Siam. His reign was characterized by the modernization of the country, including major governmental and social reforms. He is also credited with saving Siam from being colonized.
