The varieties Golden Bedder, golden yellow, and Verschaflfeltii, crimson, old, tried sorts, are as good as any you could use. Golden Queen is another yellow and John Pfister is a good crimson of dwarf habit. Set your plants nine inches apart each way and, if kept well pinched, they will soon cover the ground. For the letters plant a little more closely, say 6x8 inches, so as to get a more immediate effect. C. W. BEST SOILS FOB FLORISTS. Nitrates of Soda and Potash. The use of nitrate of soda on fertile lapd i^ attended with good results, be- cau's^ not only does it serve as a source of nitrogen itself, but it acts as a solvent of other plant foods. If it is applied to poor land, small results are seen, because there is nothing for it to act upon. In dry seasons nitrate of soda is useful to assist vegetable crops. Lettuce, onion, cabbage, cauliflower, and leaf crops generally are much ben- efited by it. But it surely impoverishes a soil, and should not be applied alone, but mixed with phosphates. Nitrate of potash, owing to its ex- pense, is not much used as a fertilizer, there being a large demand for it in the manufacture of gunpowder. It may, however, be made
