The Koblenz History Column fountain, Germany. The wine ship at the base, with the Roman castellum settlement above.

The "History Column" by Juergen Weber in Koblenz recounts the 2000 year history of the settlement of Koblenz from Roman times until the present day in ten pictures. The artist does this not only by means of an accentuated selection of happenings but also pictorially in a specifically historically philosophical interpretation. He does not let history climb in a rising spiral but arranges it by episodes, one on top of the other, sometimes divided by layers of destruction. History for him is not a progressive "improving" development, but is always a new beginning which emanates mostly from the demolished past on which it is based, but is essentially something different.
