Besides this there are severalgroups of flowering shrubs and evergreen trees with a fewspecimens of shade-trees on the lawn, a purple beech and awhite silver fir. Back of the house is a border for herba-ceous plants, and at some distance two flower-beds. A somewhat larger and more pretentious place is repre-sented in Fig. 26. This lawn covers nearly an acre ofground, with a frontage of 150 feet wide. In front of thebarn, and enclosed by a hedge, there is a good-sized vege-table garden with a few choice fruit-trees on one side, andample room for flower borders and small fruit. On thefront lawn a few carpet beds are arranged in a semicirclearound a larger one, and behind the house there is a borderfor herbaceous plants. In Fig. 27 we have a plan of a villa garden of betweenfour and five acres. The residence is simple and attractive,built of brick and stone.
