The Scandlines ferry “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”, which operates on the Rostock-Trelleborg route, is one of the largest combined Ro/Pax rail ferry vessels in the world. The ship celebrates its 10th anniversary on 13 December 2006 The Scandlines ferry, “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”, has travelled a distance corresponding to 40 times around the world or four times to the moon and back since it was launched on the Rostock-Trelleborg line exactly 10 years ago on 13 December 1996. In its ten years of operation, the “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” has carried approximately million passengers, 450,000 trucks, 260,000 cars and 160,000 railcars across the Baltic Sea, covering a distance of million kilometres. When the “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”, built at the Schichau Seebeck Shipyard in Bremerhaven, first went into scheduled service from the International Seaport of Rostock to Trelleborg on 16 December 1996, it set completely new standards for ferry traffic between Rostock and Southern Sweden. With a cargo capacity of 2,500 lane metres for cars, trucks and trailers, a track length of 945 metres for up to 50 railcars, as well as space for 900 passengers, the “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” was the world’s largest combined Ro/Pax rail ferry at that time. In order to cater for the growing volume of cargo on the direct line to Sweden from Rostock at the beginning of the 21st century, Scandlines carried out work between December 2002 and March 2003 to increase the cargo capacity of the MV “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”. During the approximately € 10 million conversion at the Polish shipyard, Gdansk Shiprepair Yard “Remantova” , the ship was give an additional truck deck, which is loaded via an internal ramp, as well as extra cabins and new service facilities. Today, the 200-metre long and 29-metre wide ferry has 3,200 lane metres of vehicle loading area, providing space for 90 trucks vehicles, as well as 450 cars and 50 railcars.
