Bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus: 30 cms.) are found near reefs in the warmer waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans. They are fast-moving and voracious predators of smaller fish, hunting nocturnally in small groups. However, during the day they congregate in favoured areas in substantial shoals, where they rest by swimming gently together. I encountered this shoal during the afternoon. It was swirling gently and I inserted myself in the middle so that the tightly packed fish were circling around me. It was pleasing to feel part of the group!
