PPAR regulatory molecule. Molecular model of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG, pink) bound to a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) mol

PPAR regulatory molecule. Molecular model of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG, pink) bound to a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule (orange and yellow). The PPAR gamma molecule is always found in a dimer with retinoid X receptor (RXR, white) when it is bound to DNA. The PPARG-RXR protein binds to DNA to either decrease or increase the expression of genes that are involved in fatty acid storage and glucose metabolism. Due to this it is a target for diabetes drugs that could lower blood sugar levels without the need for insulin.
