The Betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot in the Garden of Gethsemane: quatrefoil of vivid 13th century stained glass in a series relating the events of the Holy Week Passion of Christ in the central lancet in the east wall of the early Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, founded in the late 1100s in the northern French city of Laon, Aisne, Hauts-de-France.
Laon, Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France: The Kiss of Judas … the treacherous disciple Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, in a quatrefoil of vivid 13th century stained glass in the central lancet of the three piercing the east wall of the medieval Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon. This depiction of the incident in the garden below the Mount of Olives shows Jesus, wearing green, turning his head as Judas, in red, identifies him to watching Roman soldiers by kissing him on the cheek. One of the soldiers holds a red sword and another carries an axe. The quatrefoil is among scenes in the central lancet telling the story of the Holy Week Passion of Christ, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his subsequent arrest, crucifixion and ultimate Ascension to Heaven. Some of the designs retain all of their 13th century glass while others have been partly restored. Laon Cathedral, built in early French Gothic style in the 12th and early 13th centuries, replaced a Romanesque church that stood on the same hilltop site but was largely destroyed by fire when the neighbouring episcopal palace was torched during the Easter Insurrection of 25 April 1112. Laon lost its status as a bishopric during the French Revolution of 1789, but although the building now functions only as a parish church, it is still universally known as Laon Cathedral.
