His parents. Cornelius and Charitj- (Cum-mins) Sloat, were also natives of this county,and his father for many years satisfactorily andefficiently filled the position of Postmaster ofPine Bush: also at different times ser\-ed in otherresp)onsible jtositions, the duties of which he al-ways discharged in an able and energetic man-ner. His life has been an unev^entful one,unmarked by thrilling events, but he has pursuedthe even tenor of his way peacefully and busilj,making friends with all whom business or socialrelations brought him into contact. In youth helearned the trade of a wagon-maker, and this oc-cupation he has followed almost continuouslysince, and although now in the twilight of lifehe still does considerable work at his trade. In 1850 Mr. Sloat took unto himself a help-mate. Miss Matilda Farnham becoming his wife
