Theforces in front of him nowoutnumbered his own, andthough their Gates, was of smallability, he was supported bythe genius of Benedict Ar-nold. That strange man, though lacking in principle, was anexcellent general. He compelled Burgoyne to fight his waymile by mile. Presently Burgoyne came to a THE WAR IN NORTHERN NEW YORK Here a new flag was displayed by the Americans. The flag hoisted byWashington at Boston, in 1775, was the red ensign of the British empire withits red field diversified by while stripes. The blue canton in the upper leftcorner still contained the double cross of St. George and St. Andrew. Thislater flag was removed a point farther from the red ensign. The whitecrosses were taken from the canton, and replaced by a circle of thirteen whitestars.
