In her 22d year shewent to England to reside with her brother,then organist in Bath. When William aban-doned his former profession in favor of astron-omy she became his helpmate, and when he wasappointed private astronomer to George discharged efficiently all the duties of anassistant astronomer, for which she was alloweda small salary. Although these duties werevery arduous, she yet found time to conduct aseries of observations of her own with a smallNewtonian telescope her brother had made for. S? 3 o HERSCHEL —HERSCHELL her. She devoted special energy to the dis-oi comets, and was so successful as tobe entitled to claim the priority oi discovery ofat least five. Several remarkable nebulae andclusters of stars included in her brothers cata-ue wire ilcsi-i ibed from her original observa-ns. In [798 her valuable work, (A Catalogueof Stars taken from Mr. Flamsteeds Observa-tions, with Introductory Remarks by W. Her-schel, was published by the Royal Society. Onher brothers death in 1822 she returned to hernative country, where she died after an unusu-ally protracted life, distinguished by useful sci-entific labors. The Royal Society recognizedthe value of her labors by bestowing upon her in[838 their gold medal, and some time afterwardby conferring upon her the privileges of hon-orary membership.
