The retruded upper was caused by the extractionof badly decayed and broken-down upper first molars during childhood. It was 291 292 PART VI. DENTO-FACIAL MALOCCLUSIONS diagnosed as a prognathic mandible at the International Congress of 1900 at Paris,and the patient was then fitted with a head-cap and chin-piece which he studiouslywore at all permissible hours for over a year in a fruitless endeavor to retrude themandible and lower denture. In the meantime he had entered an Eastern college Fig. in this country, and was referred to the author by a New York dentist. The facialand dental casts on the left show the condition at that time.
