Illustration of the German-US biophysicist and biochemist Joachim Frank (born 1940). Frank has developed techniques for analysing data from electron microscopes so that sharp three dimensional images can be produced from low intensity electron beams. This removes the need for intense electron beams that destroy biological tissue. Frank was awarded a share of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Jacques Dubochet and Richard Henderson, for his work in electron microscopy.
