The foun-dations of new and greater skyscrapers brick buildings reared their splendid wallshigh above the ruins around. Building operationsinvolving an expenditure of over twenty-five mil-lions, were under way. The streets were crowdedwith wagons hauling great loads of lumber. Ordersfor whole trainloads of steel were placed with themanufactories. Carloads of cement were used months after the fire, six thousand buildings,which covered half the burned area, had beenerected.
