A little below the moulding of thecapital, fine sinkings, forming lines rounil the shaft, exist,and above these the channels of the flutes are stoppedby or near the commencement of the projecting mouldingof the capital. This moulding, which is of a sectioacalculated to convey the idea of powerful support, iscalled the echinus, and its lower portion is encircled by aseries of fillets (Fig. 59), which are cut into it. Abovethe echinus, which is circular, like tlie shaft, comes thehighest member — the abacus, a square stout slab ofmarble, which completes the capital of the column.
