Glacial retreat. Image 1 of 3. Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, in 1938. Grinnell Glacier is located in the Lewis mountain range in the Rocky Mountains of northern Montana. In 1938, the glacier, as viewed from the summit of Mount Gould, covered a large expanse from centre left to the lower right of the image. Glaciers are large, slow-moving expanses of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow. They are sensitive to climate change and in recent years most have retreated dramatically. See images E235/376 and E235/377 for images of the same glacier as seen in 1981 and 2006.
