Indeed, Ihave never known one who approached Lincoln in thepeculiar faculty of holding antagonistic elements to hisown support, and maintaining close and often apparentlyconfidential relations with each without offense to theother. This is the more remarkable from the fact thatLincoln was entirely without training in political man-agement. I remember on one occasion, when there wasmuch concern felt about a political contest in Pennsyl-vania, lie summoned half a do/en or more PennsylvaniaRepublicans to a conference at the White House.
