R. Bennett {Pharm. Jour, and Pharmacist, Aug. 3, 1912) hasconducted an investigation into the solubihty of ether in normal saline andhis findings are as follows : Normal saline is made by dissolving 091 pure sodium chloride in 99*09 grms. of distilled water. The average solubilityof grammes of purified ether prepared from methylated spirit dissolved in100 grms. of normal saline at temperatures between o C. and 30° C. are—0° C,13-46 ; 5°, iiSS ; 10°, 9-87 ; 15^ 8-50 ; 20°, ; 25°, 6-46; 30°, 5-83. ETHER. l8l The regulating-chamber tap is now opened and a continuousflow allowed through the warming chamber until this last hasbeen freed of air. Some ether will volatilise and bubble up,but this is of no importance as it is reabsorbed and cannotenter the vein. When the whole apparatus is free of air andfull of saline-ether solution the regulating chamber tap isclosed, and as soon as the air in it is compressed to its limitthe flow from the reservoir will cease. If it does not thiswill be due to some leakage out of air which must be soughtfor and prevented. The warming chamber (C) is now placedin the hot-water receptacle and the cannula and tube placedin sterilised water. Preparation of the patient.—It is advisable to preparethe patient in the usual way and to give a hypodermic in-jection of morphine gr. ^, scopolamine gr. y^^, andatropine gr. y^, one hour before the infusion is to be
