Brooklyn-born author Betty Smith (1896–1972) lived here in 1943 when she wrote her first novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. The Colonial Revival house was built around 1909 on Forest Parkway, at the time the most prominent address in Woodhaven, Queens.
