The elective action of certain drugs upon the spinal centres leadsnaturally enough to the supposition that a ptomaine or leucomame might havea similar selective tendency, as, for instance, that of diphtheria is known tohave for the peripheral nerves, or of hydrophobia for the central idea receives some support from instances in which more than one caseoccurred at the same time in a given family ; and several practical endemics ofthe disease are on record.
