Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 – 1587), reigned over Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567. On 24 June 1563, she summoned John Knox (1513 – 1572), a Scottish minister, theologian, writer, leader of the Reformation to Holyrood, after she heard he had been preaching against her proposed marriage to Don Carlos, the son of Philip II of Spain. He replied that though he was not of noble birth, he had the same duty as any subject to warn of dangers to the realm and would rather endure her tears, however, than remain silent and "betray my Commonwealth". At this, Mary ordered him out of the room
