The surgeonshould also be provided with several gouges andchisels, a strong mallet, trephines, scrapers, anda large elevator, together with a thick leatherstrap or leaden spatula for protecting the softparts during the division of the bone, suitableinstruments for holding the flaps apart, and asyringe for washing out the wound or clearingaway sawdust and the debris of diseased boneand cartilage. From this catalogue of instruments I havepurposely excluded the tourniquet, which is notonly unnecessary, but absolutely hurtful in ex-cision of the bones and joints.
