Maxillary very short, extending beyond the palatine, with a pair of large poison-fangs with obsolete grooves ; pterygoid teeth few or absent; mandibular teeth subequal. No postfrontals; prsefrontala meeting, or narrowly separated on the median line. Head small. Fig. Skull of Maps marcgravii. not distinct from neck; eye small, with vertically elliptic'or Bubelliptic pupil; nostril between two nasals; no loreal. Body cylindrical; scales smooth, without pits, in 15 rows; ventrals rounded. Tail short; subcaudals in two rows or partly single, partly in two rows.
