Bodies of soldiers were originally buried in mass graves or by their regiment depending on who they were or where they fell. From an early stage bones were continuously exposed by natural soil erosion and grave robbing. Cairns were erected over graves to protect them and have been maintained and regularly protected since. Cairns mark where soldiers are buried not necessarily where they fell.
