Magnetism experiment. 19th-century artwork of an experiment being carried out with two permanent bar magnets (one at left, one in hand), and an iron bar. The iron bar has been placed between north poles of the two permanent bar magnets, causing it to become temporarily magnetised. The ends of the iron bar will both become south poles, while the middle of the bar will become a north 'pole' (as shown). A similar effect occurs when touching the centre of an iron bar with a magnetic pole. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
