Rev. Edmund Dowse has always taken an active interest in educa-tional matters. He has served fifty years as member of the school com-mittee of Sherborn, and it was largely through his influence that theDowse High School of the same place was founded from funds contributedby Thomas Dowse (216). He was a chaplain of the Christian Commissionin the Civil war, in the army of the Cumberland and Tennessee. The semi-centennial anniversary of Dr. Dowses ordination and in-stallation as pastor of the Pilgrim Chr. in Sherborn was fittingly observedOct. 10, 1888. Rev. A. H. Coolidge of Leicester, who participated, con-tributes the following account: The day was delightful. The celebrationwas opened with a salute of fifty guns by a battery from Natick, mannedby veteran soldiers of the Civil war. A large concourse filled the meeting-house. It was composed of present and former members of the churchand society, many representatives of the ministry,
