It has been found, also, that numbers ofwhite persons have been recognized by theblacks as being the spirits of their lost rela-tives, and have in consequence been digni-fied with the names of those whom theyrepresented. Mr. MGillivray mentions thatthe natives of Port Essington have a slightmodification of this theory, believing thatafter death they become Malays. Of their belief in the metempsychosis, ortransmigration into animal forms, there arebut few examples. Dr. Bennett mentionsthat on one occasion, at Berana Plains, whenan European was chasing one of the nativeanimals, a native who was with him beggedhim not to kill it, but to take it alive, as itwas him brother.
