The monastery of Santa Maria de la Valldigna was founded by Jaime II el Just, when in 1298 he ceded the land to the abbot of Santes Creus for a new Cistercian foundation. The complex has been undergoing restoration since the Valencia Regional Government acquired it in 1991.
