The surgeon's handbook on the treatment of wounded in war : a prize essay . Surgeons knot. Fig. Twisted suture. Esmarch, the Surgeons Handbook. The false knot or granny. When the edges of the woundare considerably strained, it isbest in the first knot to twistthe ends of the thread twiceround each other (fig. 24, sur-geons knot), and on that totie the second, as in the reefknot. b. The twis-ted suture(fig. 25) isapplied bymeans of In-sect - needles(Carlsbadneedles),whose pointsare beatenflat and shar-pened in theform of alance. When they havebeen carriedthrough theskin at some distancefrom the ed-ges of the2- \8 wound, they are wrapped round with thick cotton threads in alternatingcircles and figures of eight, so that the edges of the skin are pressedfirmly against each other. The ends of the needle are then nipped offwith a pair of pliers. To unite the edges of the wound more accurately,a few fine interrupted sutures are placed in the intervals between theneedles. The remains of the needles can be drawn out on the secondday, with a twisting motion, by means of a pair of pincers
