Field of Jeans exhibit, Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, features fabric that purifies the air by catalytic technology
Field of Jeans exhibition at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) shows that everyday clothes such as blue jeans can purify the air we breathe. Catalytic Clothing demonstrates how clothing and textiles can be used as a carrier surface to purify air employing existing nanotechnology. It is the brainchild of artist and fashion designer Helen Storey and chemist Tony Ryan. Catalytic Clothing harnesses the power of a photocatalyst to break down air borne pollutants. A photocatalyst harnesses the energy it needs to be active from daylight. A laundry additive created by University of Sheffield and the London College of Fashion can turn clothing into a photocatalytic material that can help remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the air - nitrogen oxides are emitted from vehicle exhausts. It is claimed that one person wearing clothing treated with the additive for a day would be able to remove the same amount of nitrogen oxides produced daily by the average family car. The liquid laundry additive (Ecover is one of the exhibition's sponsors) contains pollution-eating titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles that, in daylight, oxidize the nitrogen oxides in the fabric when they come into contact with them in the air. The treated nitrogen oxides pose no pollution hazard. London College of Fashion professor Helen Storey is an artist and designer. Tony Ryan is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science at the University of Sheffield.
