So it is clear thatalthough Woodson was a goodcompromise candidate he was nota strong candidate since the per-centage of his plurality vote to the total vote cast was only13%, or about half of the percent obtained by Brown. TheRepublicans although defeated had added greatly to theirstrength. Of course the total vote cast in 1872 was verylarge owing to every man being now permitted to vote. During Woodsons administration the ^tate debt was re-funded and the third state normal school, now the stateteachers college, was established at Cape Girardeau.
