Lana Vanvoorhees, of Underwood, Iowa, assigned to the Medical Treatment Facility aboard the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Hospital Ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), teaches infant CPR to nursing students from Datu Halun Sakilan Memorial Hospital, while the ship visits the city on a scheduled humanitarian mission. The Mercy has already visited Zamboanga and Jolo, Philippines, where its crew had treated several thousand patients. The ship will bring patients aboard where its doctors will perform major surgeries to remove goiters and cataracts as well as repair cleft lips. Ashore, teams of doctors, nurses and corpsmen spend their time providing aid to patients not requiring treatment aboard the ship. Mercy's medical staff will provide a multitude of medical, dental and veterinary care for pets of the people who live in this region, together with their Filipino counterparts, both at local city medical centers and on the ship itself.
