Michael Collins (1890-1922) an Irish revolutionary, soldier and politician making a political speech. He was a leading figure in the early-20th century struggle for Irish independence. He travelled to the London peace conference to negotiate a treaty against his will protesting that he was "a soldier, not a politician". The Irish Cabinet of seven split on the issue, with de Valera casting the deciding vote. Many of Collins' associates warned him not to go, that he was being set up as a political scapegoat.
