This one had lost pa-tience. There on the stage was the apparatusof the master—the famous table, the mysteriouscurtain, and various devices for astonishingthe unlearned. But monsieur himself did notmake his appearance, and the people were be-ginning to grow abusive of the theater-man-ager, M. Truchette, his assistants, and even theinnocent little orchestra tooting and scrapingaway to fill up the time, and growing nervousat the murmurs of discontent on every side.
