A specimen of the mineral rhodochrosite, found in Africa. Rhodochrosite is formed in hydrothermal veins associated with copper, silver and lead sulfides and other manganese minerals. It is fairly common as a sedimentary mineral in the oxidation zone of sulfide deposits or as a precipitate from hydrothermal solutions. Its crystals are rhombohedral. It is used as an ore of manganese when available in large enough quantities.
