From 1910, she worked in the Dairy Division at the US Department of Agriculture. She studied the microbiology and flavour and shelf-life of dairy products, especially milk and cheese. In 1918, she published her study of Bacillus abortus, demonstrating that this milk-borne bacteria caused brucellosis in both cows and humans. She joined the US Public Health Service in 1918 and worked on infectious diseases. She was the first female president of the Society of American Bacteriologists (1928).
