Simple, rustic interior of the fully enclosed western porch of the half timbered Église Nôtre-Dame (Church of Our Lady), built in the early 1500s at Châtillon-sur-Broué in the Marne, Grand Est, France. The porch is paved with ancient red and black tiles and features simple wooden benches and an old wooden ladder climbing to the slate-hung belfry above. Nôtre-Dame is among the churches and chapels on a signposted tour of timber framing in the historic Champagne region.

Châtillon-sur-Broué, Marne, Grand Est, France: ancient red and black tiles pave the interior of the large fully enclosed porch at the west end of the timber framed Église Nôtre-Dame or Church of Our Lady, built in the early 1500s in this small village southwest of the Lac du Der reservoir. The porch's rustic interior, entered through plank double doors and lit by large windows on either side, makes few if any concessions to modernity, with simple benches against the west wall and an old wooden ladder allowing access to the slate-hung bell tower and spire above. The church dates from the first two decades of the 16th century, although the bell tower was rebuilt in 1822 and the red-tiled roof has been replaced more recently. The building is an excellent example of the traditional half timbered churches and chapels in this part of the historic Champagne region. Apart from the enclosed porch - an unusual feature for timbered churches in this area - it has a high and wide nave and a polygonal apse. The church is amongst the attractions on the "Route des églises à pans de bois", a signposted tour of 15 villages in the peaceful Pays du Der countryside covering the Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne departments. They all feature timber framed churches, chapels, houses and farms, with the religious buildings constructed between the late-1400s and the 18th century.
