This is an experiment of the practicability of which somepersons will entertain doubts. It is hardly probable that the scheme willever be carried out. It would be more practicable to enlarge the entire trade of Louisville was estimated, in 1850, at fifty millions ofdollars per annum ; but since that period, its business has increasedamazingly. There are now at least one hundreri houses doing an exclus-ive wholesale business,the amount of whichalone is computed atover twent^-millions—viz., twenty-five of drygoods ; thirty-nine ofgroceries; eight ofdrugs; nine of hard-ware ; eight of hatsand furs; eight ofboots and shoes; tenof saddlery ; besidesmany others. The chief articles of export are tobacco,flour, pork and hemp. Pork-packing is prosecuted to a very large extent—of late years, fully equalling that of Cincinnati. The quantity of tobaccoannually received varies from sixteen to eighteen thousand number of steamboat arrivals from ports below the falls, in 1852,was over eleven thousand ; the arrivals from ports above, during the sametime, were about the same.
