Ammonite. Fossil of a Perisphinctes sp. ammonite. Ammonites were marine molluscs that formed a spiral shell to protect their soft body. They first appeared in the fossil record around 400 million years ago in the late Silurian and early Devonian periods and became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. This fossil dates back to the Late Jurassic epoch (160 to 145 million years ago) and measures 20 centimetres in diameter. It was found in France.
