Outer Construction Detail of Fortified Wall and Gun Ports at Historic Bayards Cove Fort; River Dart, Dartmouth, Devon, England.

Detailed view looking at the fortified outer walls and gun ports of Bayards Cove fort, on the River Dart at Dartmouth in Devon. This shows the stone construction of this historic building, particularly the different techniques for the base, at the waterline, and thick protective walls. Bayard's Cove fort was built at the narrowest part of the River Dart estuary in 1534 to protect the busy port. At ground level are a series of gun ports with commanding views which can be explored today. There would have been steps to an upper walk way, a view point and location to fire muskets at potential marauders. The yellow patches are lichen growing on some of the stones. The waterfront setting along the Quay approach to the fort is a very popular location for film makers. The view beyond is that of the River Dart with the Lower Ferry arriving at the Dartmouth slipway and moored boats. Views along this West Country estuary are stunning and can be best viewed from the river.
