Draining ascites. Artwork of a section through the abdomen showing ascites (purple), the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, being drained. The lungs (blue) are at top, with the liver (brown) below. Ascites is most often a complication of liver disease, but may be due to cancers of the abdominal organs. Treatment is of the underlying condition, but diuretics and draining the fluid can be used to reduce the ascites.
