Turkey, are 132 Protestant common schools, with 4174 pupils,214 native laborers, occupying 119 cities and villages, in which are8256 Protestants, and an average of about 6,000 attendants onSabbath worship; 190 persons are in training for Christian work,and there are 32 churches, with 1890 It is thought that in the Harpoot field, the grand ultimatum ofmissionary work — a church, a ministry, and Christian institutionsof learning, supported and carried on by the natives—may bereached in the immediate future, and the missionaries set free togo into the regions beyond. The first, and most important step, tothis end just at present, seems to be the establishment, on a per-manent basis, of an institution which shall furnish the disciplineand culture of a thorough education, *to the men and women whoare to be the leaders of thought; who are to mould and give wisedirection to private and public life; who, in a word, are to embodythe ideas of the Gospel in the thoughts, and lives of the people, as-suming and carrying forward the work of evangelization.
