After that, the majority of animals in this assemblage were found to be spawning. About 6 hr after the first spawning, all animals seemed to have completed spawning. At 6:30 the following morning (May 9), the assemblage was almost disordered. In the other assemblage, spawning commenced 3 hr after the onset of the spawning in the first one. The process of spawning in the other assemblage was very similar to that in the first. In the evening of May 9, the assemblages were completely disorganized and constituent individuals in either assemblage got mixed. After the disorganization of the assemblages, two egg masses were found, and these were not protected by the adults. Isolated culture, a proof of self-fertilication From the characteristic breeding assemblage observed, it seems that this species engages in cross-fertilization. However, there is a possibility that the species also indulges in self-fertilization, since histological observations show.
