The original station, which was describedin the Street Railway Journal Sept. 5, 1903, containedthree looo-kw a. c. generators connected to Allis-Chalmersvertical Corliss cross-compound units and three lOOO-kwturbo-generators. The additions have been necessitatedpartly by the extension of the railway and power system. REINFORCEMENT OF PIERS IN WEST PENN RAILWAYCOMPANYS POWER HOUSE and partly by the shutting down of 16 central stationplants which previously served the railway and lightingproperties. The improvements made have consisted of the installa-tion of a 3250-kw Westinghouse turbine with necessarycondensing apparatus and the installation of ten 400-hpBonus-Freeman water tube boilers. The two boilers al-ready installed and eight additional ones will be placed in a row parallel to and facing the old boilers, and they willbe enclosed in an extension to the present boiler housewhich will contain overhead bunkers of 1600 tons capacity. The plans contemplate a general overhauling of theswitchboard apparatus and the installation of remote con-trol high-tension switches built by the Hartman CircuitBreaker Company.
