Sperm selection for IVF. Scientist screening sperm for use in in vitro fertilisation (IVF). She is pipetting sperm into a counting chamber. The sperm will be injected into ova (eggs) to fertilise them and the resultant zygotes will be grown in the lab until they reach an early stage of embryonic development. They will then be implanted in a patient's uterus. This can result in multiple births. Photographed at the Marques Institute, Barcelona, Spain. The Institute is the first in Europe to offer embryo adoption, where the embryos implanted into a woman's uterus are not biologically linked to her or her partner.
